Fatal Crash In Fort Hale Park

A 68-year-old West Haven driver named Kevin Gormley died following a fatal single-vehicle crash in Fort Hale Park.

New Haven Police Department (NHPS) spokesperson Capt. Rose Dell delivered that news in an updated email press release sent out Monday morning.

She wrote that, at 6:12 p.m. Saturday, city police officers responded to Fort Hale park to investigate a fatal crash involving a single vehicle.

Arriving officers found the front end of a Toyota Tundra abutted against a wooden guard rail on Woodward Avenue across the street from the entrance to the park,” she wrote. Firefighters arrived and tended to the unresponsive operator.’

The driver, Gormley, was pronounced deceased on scene.

The New Haven Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and is handling the case. Investigators will be analyzing evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine the sequence of events that led to this crash.

Anyone who witnessed this crash or who may have information valuable to the investigators is urged to call police at 203 – 946-6304 or through the Department’s anonymous tip-line at 866 – 888-TIPS (8477).

Dell also sent out a press release over the weekend about a shooting that took place in Newhallville on Friday evening at around 7:40 p.m.

She said that the NHPD dispatch center received 911 calls at that time about a person who had been shot on a park bench in the area of Watson and Bassett Streets.

During one call, a shot could be heard while the caller was providing the dispatcher with information,” Dell wrote.

Officers responded and located the victim, a 42-year-old male, of New Haven, who was suffering from a gunshot wound and an injury to the back of his head. The victim was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital by ambulance. Medical personnel informed officers that his injuries are not life threatening.”

Dell wrote that investigators learned that the victim had been shot and pistol-whipped during a robbery. Numerous personal effects were stolen from the victim during the course of the robbery.”

Detectives from the NHPD’s Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification responded to the scene and found one fired cartridge casing by the park bench.
