Fill er Up

City lawmakers gave the green light to a plan to install a new discount gas station at the Stop & Shop on Whalley Avenue.

The Board of Aldermen voted Monday night to approve a land disposition agreement between the city and Dwight Golden LLC, authorizing the sale of two pieces of land at the corner of Orchard and Elm streets, for the construction of a new Stop & Shop discount gas station. The board also approved a zoning change for the project.

This million-dollar project represents economic development for the city and discount gas for its residents,” said East Rock Alderman Jessica Holmes, as she introduced the two items for a vote.

The land has been appraised for $128,000 but is being sold for $1, Holmes said. The developer has agreed to undertake the expensive job of dealing with contamination at the site.

Aldermen voted unanimously to approve the deal. The station could begin pumping as soon as this spring.
