When two men were caught using fake credit cards, they tried a third fraud — offering a fake ID.
That’s according to police spokesman Dave Hartman. Here’s what he said happened:
At 5:20 p.m. on Monday, Officer Darryl Cargill was called to the electronics department of the Walmart on Foxon Boulevard, where two men had been trying to buy two iPads.
A 21-year-old Georgia man had initially tried to make the purchase with an AT&T Visa Card. The clerk had to call the credit card company, but the man wasn’t able to answer any of the required security questions.
Officer Cargill compared the credit card to one of his own. It looked fake. “It lacked a professional look and feel,” Hartman said. The bank confirmed it was a fraud.
A 22-year-old Brooklyn. NY, man tried to distract the investigation by offering up his own credit card for the sale. It turned out to be a fake also.
As the two men were being arrested, the 22-year-old offered a New Jersey driver’s license—also a fake.
The two men were arrested on charges of interfering, attempted larceny, and unlawful reproduction of a credit card.
70-Year-Old Charged In Fire At 2 p.m. on Monday, police responded to a third-floor apartment on Lighthouse Road, where firefighters had extinguished a fire. They had arrived to find a fire in the middle bedroom and a mattress burning in the kitchen. The apartment’s 70-year-old tenant was dragging the burning mattress through the kitchen.
Fire Investigators Michael Torre and Todd Kornacki spoke with the woman, who had soot on her hand and face, including her nostrils.
The woman told investigators that she had been cooking hamburgers when grease from the stove lit her mattress on fire. She told cops she sleeps in the kitchen because her bedrooms smells like smoke.
“When her grease fire theory was challenged by the investigators, she offered that lightning may have struck the mattress and caused the fire,” Hartman said.
Cops arrested the woman and charged her with reckless burning.
Man Grabs Teen’s Bike Police arrested a 32-year-old man on Sunday who was high on PCP. After one cop sent him to the hospital for detoxification, another discovered that he had pushed a 14-year-old kid down and stolen his bike. Police found the bike and returned it to the teen.
Man Arrested For Unemployment Fraud Police Thursday arrested a 52-year-old man for collecting more than $7,000 in unemployment payments to which he was not entitled.
The arrest was the result of an investigation by the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney, after a complaint by the the Department of Labor.
The man allegedly collected $7,671 between 2011 and 2012. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the man collected some of the money while he was unemployed, and also used another man’s Social Security number.
