All five attendees at the Green Party’s Nominating Convention Tuesday voted to back Patricia Kane’s run for Fair Haven Heights alder.

That convention took place over Zoom Tuesday evening and marked a third party’s attempt to find its way back into elected office, and local political relevance.

This is the beginning of building back in our area,” Kane said.

Kane will be the first Green Party candidate for alder in New Haven since 2009. The last Green Party candidate elected was Allan Brison of Ward 10 in 2007.

Caleb Klep made the motion to endorse Kane. Former Green Party Registrar of Voters candidate Paul Garlinghouse seconded the motion. Also in attendance Tuesday was former Green Party Congressional candidate and Guilford resident Justin Paglino.

Kane had to win the local party’s endorsement in order for the Secretary of State to certify her run for aldermanic office. She said her candidacy has been formally approved by the City/Town Clerk after she succeeded in collecting six required signatures from registered Green Party members in the ward.

Green Party’s Nominating Convention Tuesday night.

Huge respect and appreciation for anyone who has run for office or is running for office,” Klep said. Win or lose, it’s an important thing to do. You never know what’s gonna happen until you try.”

Kane said the party’s other mission now is to try to bring folks back to the Green Party after many switched to Democrat to vote for Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic primary. She said the local party’s goal is to remind people who we are and what we’re about.”

The Fair Haven Heights ward is currently represented by Rosa Ferraro-Santana. At Tuesday night’s Democratic Town Convention, Ferraro-Santana won the Ward 13 Democratic Ward Committee’s support for another two-year term in office.

Republican challenger Deborah Reyes has also won her local party’s endorsement to run for the Ward 13 seat.

That means Ward 13 will likely see a three-way contest in November’s general election between the Democratic, Republican, and Green Party candidates.

According to the Registrar of Voters office, Ward 13 currently has 1,149 registered Democrats, 126 registered Republicans, 682 registered unaffiliated voters, and 26 registered third party voters.
