Over 100 kids now have backpacks before school starts next week, thanks to a first-ever back-to-school backpack drive hosted by Ice the Beef.
Ice The Beef, a peacemaking group organized by former gangbanger Darrell “D‑Russ” Allick (pictured), also rallied troops for the city’s new Kindergarten Canvass.
The “Ice the Beef — Back to School Back Pack Drive,” organized by Monique Givens, drew over 500 people to Goffe Street Park Saturday, according to Johanna Davis, who sent in photos from the event.
“Kids enjoyed every event”: face painting, tug of war, “moon bounce,” a dance contest and free food, she said.
I think this is great, and its competition I do not mind at all (I am a supporter of Lt Sweeney's book bag drive). I opine that celebrating going back to school sends a very positive message. A society gets what it celebrates.
