Sensationalism is a type of media bias in which information is presented in a way that gives a shock or makes a deep impression. Often it gives readers a false sense of culmination, that all previous reporting has led to this ultimate story.

Sensationalist language is often dramatic, yet vague. It often involves hyperbole at the expense of accuracy or warping reality to mislead or provoke a strong reaction in the reader.

In recent years, some media outlets have been criticized for overusing the term breaking or breaking news, which historically was reserved for stories of deep impact or wide-scale importance.

With this type of media bias, reporters often increase the readability of their pieces using vivid verbs. But there are many verbs that are heavy with implications that cant be objectively corroborated: blast slam bury abuse destroy worry.

Well, this story gets curiouser and curiouser. Lots of people talking about what should or shouldn't be happening regarding marriage licenses and intimating that there was overt discrimination. Then, this article states that the "Independent also noted that there is no information publicly available to indicate that Clark reported a third of all marriages in a three-month period to federal immigration authorities specifically because the married couples were Hispanic." So why is Lamont basically putting the verdict of "guilty" out there when the situation is still under investigation?

This is an important topic, but I'd like to see the Governor and Elicker focus as much attention on violent crime, especially the violent crime being committed by juveniles.

Thanks to the Governor and others the entire state smells like marijuana. Thanks Ned. Now he's questioning the marriage questions.

"Lamont Slams New Haven Marriage Discrimination." Apparently, Lamont and the NHI have already determined that Ms.Clark is guilty of discrimination. The new wave of reporting "Guilty Until Proven Innocent." She may have discriminated, but then again, why not wait until all the facts are in?

Ms. Clark has not fully explained the reasons for reporting the couples to USCIS. Until she does, or the citys investigation is complete, I will refrain from opining on this point.

But Ms. Clark refused to issue marriage licenses when one or both of the partners could not provide a birth certificate. She did this in spite of guidance from a staffer at the relevant state agency that birth certificates are not required. In fact, they do not qualify as a primary identification required for a marriage license, since they have neither the applicants signature or an expiration date (Conn. Agencies Regs. Sec. 19a-41-13). If the applicant is unable to provide a valid ID, such as a drivers license, they can submit two other IDs, one of which may be their birth certificate. And if the registrar has reason to question the authenticity of an ID submitted by an applicant, the registrar can demand any of 15 documents, which again can include a birth certificate. Ms. Clark has not stated that she questioned the authenticity of any of the submitted documents, much less the basis for any doubts. Ms. Clarks refusal to issue the licenses would be problematic, even if all of the applicants had ancestors who came over on the Mayflower.

Misunderstanding the relevant law is grounds for retraining the involved employees. If the city finds that she discriminated on the basis of nationality or color, punitive sanctions are in order.

The continued almost daily demonization of Ms. Clark is horrendous. Politicians and special interest devotees are so craven in their efforts to pander and promote an agenda.

I don't always agree with you, but your consistent adherence to the facts, instead of name calling is constructive and refreshing.

And, I think the reporting by the staff at the "Independent" is mostly dependable, accurate and informative.

Im glad is Lamont is saying that if the reason why this clerk refused to give marriage licenses is due to discrimination, that it was wrong. But maybe he should look into why state Office of Vital Records employee emailed the city Registrar of Vital Statistics clerk to report suspicious marriages to an

immigration officer at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) agency, which is a division of the federal Department of Homeland Security. A state Department of Public Health (DPH.)

His employees email led to the behavior of the city clerk, so his house isnt in order, either.

In other news The State of Texas announced that any persons entering Texas illegally will be arrested and sent back. States Rights over rule Federal law just like the people of New Haven are fighting for.

I take pride in residing in a state that champions sanctuary status. Those with a narrow mindset, like the Karen-minded types are vigilantes, seek control over others without recognizing their humanity. Such individuals are unfit to serve in our city or state governments. Vigilante actions unfairly impact people of color. Always has. Always will. A historical truth that persists today.

This issue highlights a broader concern. Why is the Health Program Associate of the state encouraging Registrars in East Haven and New Haven to report individuals to USCIS? And goes as far as providing contact information for an immigration officer and giving guidance on the information they need to submit for the officer to initiate an investigation. While this might not directly contradict current state law, it certainly contradicts the spirit of the 2019 PA 19-20, also known as "An Act Concerning the Trust Act." For instance, if someone confesses in the back of a police car to marrying for a US Visa, the state trooper cannot notify USCIS without violating state law. However, individuals like Kathleen Sehi, Patricia Trish Clark, and possibly Lisa Balterwho lack training in detecting fraudulent marriages and lack legal authority to gather enough information to verify whether the licenses are fraudulent have this capability.

Rebuilding the trust we've lost will be an arduous task. The way the state and cities handle this situation is crucial.
In everyday terms, "should is defined as used to indicate obligation, duty, or correctness. The excuse presented by Boyle on behalf of Sehi falls short.

Several steps need to be taken:

• A comprehensive effort is required to ensure that the 2019 PA 19-20 is applicable to all state employees, not just law enforcement.
  
• New Haven should make the move to officially become a sanctuary city and no longer rely on an executive order, which apparently even high-level city employees do not read or understand.

• New Haven should provide mandatory, comprehensive training sessions for all city employees, specifically focusing on the intricacies of this executive order and how it affects their service to residents.
  
• New Haven should allocate $1 - $2 million toward legal fees for affected families. Relying solely on overburdened pro-bono services that already turn away people in need is not a viable solution.
  
  Some critical questions remain unanswered:
  
• Is there an investigation underway regarding Kathleen Sehi's conduct, and is she facing disciplinary action?
  
• Has it been established how many, if any, individuals Registrar Balter reported to USCIS?
  
• How many individuals have been reported to USCIS by state employees?

Fascism and Fascistic ideology coming from Trump is creeping into our democracy. We all know this. And, that is why what you said is so important.

I believe we need to speak out and write about the Fascists in our midst and the language they use.

Trump is ignorant and doesn't understand or know much about history. But, the Fascists around him do. They include Steven Miller and Steve Bannon. Trump doesn't read and when asked recently, he couldn't even conjure up one of his favorite quotes from the Bible.

Trump, Miller and Bannon the leaders of this cabal embrace and use Fascist language because it is part of shaping a Fascist ideology.

Trump is doing us a favor because everyday he is exposing his Fascist tendencies in his speech. Recently in one of his speeches he included the vile idea that immigrants are going to poison the blood of this country or something like that.

To create confusion Trump uses his twisted ideology on ordinary issues like his hate towards immigrants even though his two wives were immigrants. He calls the Jan 6 criminal case against him "election interference" when he knows his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol was just that.

If Trump was Clarabell the Clown, that would be one thing. But, he's not.

Trump appeals to those who want to the "Make America Great Again" crowd who from my experience have never done anything whatsoever to "MAGA".

None have served on a local committee, many didn't vote before Trump came along, most of them that I know complain instead of doing anything to make positive change.

Here are positive and negative comments for the Registrar of Vital Statistics. What I can say is that Patricia Clark who used to work in Human Resources, has done a terrific job in cleaning up the Vital Statistics office. The staff is pleasant and works very efficiently. Patricia cleaned up that office with positive vibes all across the board. I don't believe with my whole self that she did wrongdoing purposefully. This has to be played out and investigated, and I am confident that Patricia didn't do anything illegal or intentionally wrong. She has worked in the city for many years and has a great reputation of excellent work ethics. A lot more than we can say for many of the city's staff. Let the investigation play out and I am sure that Patricia will show to be honest and hard working. Then at the end of the day, maybe she will be another lawsuit against the city for wrongful accusations. Who knows, we soon shall find out. Shameful and embarrassing that the city of New Haven has so much controversary with employees. Could it be the lack of a strong and positive administration? Hmmmm.......
