At city government’s latest iteration of Democracy School.
That’s the semi-regular crash course that City Hall runs on how local government works.
The new ten-week course is open to New Haveners aged 18 and older. It will run from Sept. 11 through Nov. 6.
Applications are due Sept. 3.
See the above flyer for details, and click here or here to apply. For other questions, call or email Haley Vincent-Simpson at (203) 946‑4932 or hvincent@newhavenct.gov.
The city last ran a Democracy School course in 2023. Yours truly attended the program in 2017.
“Democracy School was one of the ways that I started getting involved in city government,” Mayor Justin Elicker told the Independent. “Joining Democracy School will not only help residents better understand New Haven city government but empower them to participate in a stronger version of our city. For years, this opportunity has brought up new generations of elected leaders, public servants, and engaged community members. Ultimately, it’s a toolkit to understand the issues our city faces, the mechanisms that local government has to tackle problems, and an invitation to support that work. I encourage New Haveners to apply and consider the connections, education, and community that an opportunity like Democracy School provides.”
