Matt modeled accessible and engaged leadership from the perspective of a CT media consumer. I can't think of any other business leader who would say something like this and mean it: "Would love to listen and talk about how Hearst CT will hold itself accountable and invite scrutiny over how we report, edit and present the news." I haven't heard any of the Hearst reporters chime in, but from the cheap seats of being a daily reader, this feels like a huge loss. I've seen our amazing reporters in this last year tackle really important and complicated topics. I hope that continues under the new editor.

This is why I would not subscribe and pay to look at the NHR on line. It is not local, other than fires and accidents, real journalists are being purged, and out of town folk who know or care little for local news will supply the bland regurgitation of wire news releases.

Cityyankee: Those items are far more British and Irish than Canadian. I have never had black pudding in Canada.

Guillermo798: Pountine is French-Canadian, and Metcalfe is anglophone. In addition to New Brunswick, she's also worked in Toronto and Strathclyde/Clydesdale, Scotland.

Wendy Metcalfe comes to Connecticut from her position as the editor of Brunswick News Inc. in New Brunswick, where the the level of media ownership concentration is almost unparalleled in the western world. Every single daily newspaper in New Brunswick is owned by the Irving family, who are also Oil tycoons. (There are Irving gas stations across New England as well.) Metcalfe went from the Toronto Star to New Brunswick in only 2016, so she's not a career Irving loyalist (and the Toronto Star is a great paper), but the New Brunswick situation is a frightening one for anyone worried about media concentration, especially given how much Hearst has been buying over the last few years. (Eight dailies now.) Perhaps a good line of questioning for you, Paul, if you get a chance to interview her.

cityyankee: Food is one of our most basic needs, and populations will suffer authoritarian and totalitarian regimes in return for assurance of basic needs. Regarding 1984, the left, particularly in academia, have been promoting Newspeak, thoughtcrimes and fighting wrongthink for decades, long before the collapse of print media. One of the things we have lost is a sense of humor.

I am disappointed to learn that Matt DiRienzo's has been fired. I was getting used to the recent Hearst New Haven Register, and thought it was an improvement over what preceded it. Reading both the NHRegister and the NHIndependent provided relatively good local coverage.
