New Cross Principal Chosen

John Tarka.

The Board of Education is scheduled to vote Monday night on a slate of new appointments and transfers, including the selection of John Tarka as the new principal of Wilbur Cross High School.

If his appointment is approved as expected, Tarka will succeed Edith Johnson, who is moving into the position of school system director of professional learning after running the city’s largest high school since 2013.

Tarka would begin in the post on July 1 and earn a salary of $167,095, according to a superintendent’s personnel report prepared for the meeting.

Tarka has served as principal of ACES Whitney Academy. (Watch him address the school community during the pandemic in this video.) He has also served as an assistant principal at Hillhouse High School. (Click here to read a New Haven Register article about his public-art sideline.)

The board will also vote on making Stephanie Skiba the principal of Barnard school. (An earlier version of the story had her listed as assistant principal. We reget the error.)

Other appointments up for approval Monday evening include nine promotions to assistant principal positions: Alice Coleman at Hill Regional Career High School, Christopher Fry at Truman School, Karen Lorde at Wexler Grant, Shanette Robinson and Kimala Bisasor-Williams at Hillhouse, Eva Schultz at Lincoln-Bassett, Stephen Siena at Beecher, Alex Sinclair at Brennan Rogers, and Melanie Thomas at Obama.
