A - Housing is a human right, though not recognized by our government. Such a right imposes a duty on government to act. Perhaps we should begin a movement to enshrine the right to housing in the state Constitution, like the right to education (which is not in the US Constitution but in the CT Constitution).
B - People before me have said the American government allows homelessness to exist as a threat to the rest of us that if we do not toil in the corporate capitalist service mills, we too will be tossed in the street like detritus.
C - For most housing construction in New Haven, the cost of building outstrips the possible resale value of the home. Suburban appraisers who think poorly of the New Haven neighborhoods for possible construction lowball potential resale values and banks will not finance because they cannot guarantee their investment. The result is that big money developers monopolize new housing construction, and build apartments that people will never own and never be able to build housing related wealth. These developers often receive subsidies.
