A come-from-behind victory on the basketball court was followed by a scary moment out in the parking lot at Wilbur Cross High School Monday night.
On the court, the school’s basketball team overcame a first-half deficit to squeeze out a victory in the Class L state quarterfinals.
After the game, someone shot two bullets at one of Cross’s basketball players as he was leaving the area with his dad.
“There he is!” someone called out before the shots were fired around 7:50 p.m., according to Sgt. Al Vazquez, head of the police department’s major crimes unit.
The bullets did not hit the target, who is a junior and an honor student, Vazquez said.
Police found out who fired the shots and arrested him at his home at 1:30 a.m., Vazquez said. The shooter is 19 years old and was graduated from Cross last year. He also has a previous gun arrest.
“He was charged with criminal attempt to commit assault in the first degree, unlawful discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment in the first degree and carrying a pistol without a permit,” according to a subsequent press release. “When apprehended, [the alleged shooter] was in possession of two cell phones, a black face mask and drug packaging materials.”
Police showed up at Cross Tuesday morning to reassure people that an arrest had been made.
The shooting followed a dispute involving three gangs, Vazquez said. He declined to define them. Police do not believe the student who was shot at was himself involved in any gang activity, according to Assistant Police Chief Archie Generoso.
The gangs are believed to include the Hill-based Slut Wave and the Tre from the Dwight-Kensington area.
