A 23-year-old University of New Haven graduate student named Priyanshu Agwal died from injuries he sustained in a hit-and-run crash on Whalley Avenue and Amity Road.

The crash took place on Oct. 18. According to an email press release sent out on Tuesday by New Haven Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Cherelle Carr, Agwal died at Yale New Haven Hospital on Oct. 26.

Agwal, who spent eight days at the hospital before succumbing to his injuries, was from Deoli, Rajasthan in India and lived in West Haven, according to his Facebook profile.

He was a current Master’s student at the University of New Haven and an aspiring business analytics professional.

In the police department’s Tuesday press release, Carr wrote that Agwal was on a scooter at Whalley and Amity at around 11:08 p.m. on Oct. 18 when he was struck by a car that evaded the scene.” She said that the evading vehicle was traveling west through the intersection of Whalley at Amity as Agwal, on his scooter, was traveling east on Whalley.

Carr stated that officers are still in search of the driver, who fled the scene after the accident. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident or have information can call at 203 – 946-6304 or through the department’s anonymous tip-line at 866 – 888-TIPS (8477).

Agwal’s family has started a fundraiser to help cover expenses related to his injuries, medical treatment, and subsequent death. He was on the verge of completing his graduation in Business Analytics in May 2024,” that GoFundMe reads, a testament to his hard work and ambition.”
