Police are investigating a robbery at Shell Gas Station on Willow Street, after the clerk said he was held up at gunpoint.
According to police spokesperson Officer David Hartman, the clerk said a man approached him early Saturday morning with a black pistol, made him open the register and ran away with about $500. The alleged robbery happened at about 12:57 a.m.
The city saw three other attempts at robbery this week — one successful and the other two failed.
Monday at 12:52 a.m., a man called the police because he said he’d been assaulted and robbed at gunpoint at Orchard and George Streets, returning from the nearby Walgreens. The man said a gold and silver four-door Honda Civic stopped at the corner and four young men in their teens to early twenties got out.
One man pointed a black handgun at the victim, according to the statement. Another punched at the side of his face. They went through his pockets, finding $320 and taking his $600 platinum chain from his neck. They left in the Honda, the victim’s statement said. The case is still open.
A day later, Tuesday at 12:32 a.m., officers headed to Williams Street near Bradley Street after a man said he had been punched during a failed robbery. He said he was taking a walk when three men approached him, pushed him to the ground and punched him several times.
The victim said they went through his pockets but found nothing so they ran toward Lyon Street. Police did not find them.
Wednesday at 12:41 a.m., officers went to Clay and Filmore Streets, finding a young man on the sidewalk. He said he had been pistol-whipped by one of two men who had tried to rob him and failed. They ran off without any of his valuables.
The young man told officers that he remembers seeing one of the perpetrators at a recent shooting scene and suspects the attack was not random. Detectives are investigating this case.
Will contact the New Haven PD today. My wife says he (man in the photo) looks like the male that she reported as a suspicious person Saturday June 11th, approximately 10:30. She was unloading her car with multiple grocery bags.
She first noticed him as he was heading south on Olive St. from Grand as she was looking for parking. He was carrying a clear plastic bag close to his wrist with something in it. As she began unloading the car he did an about face and began walking North past her across the street. She stopped and dropped her bags and stared at him obviously and waited as he continued to walk further North.
Thinking she had succeeded in staring him away, she dropped her guard, resumed removing her groceries and with both hands full looked up to see him again- a third time across the street, now putting his hood up over his head. She was scared and said she was calling the cops but not shouting it. A young man on a bicycle came around the corner as this happened, perhaps thwarting a holdup.
We want to commend the New Haven Police Department, Dispatch and Officer Bragia SP? who responded within 10 minutes and my wife watched the cruiser with floodlights searching on Olive Street and continuing around Wooster Square Park. Outstanding Response time! Thank You New Haven Police for having our backs.
