Drive-by Shots Fired Near Hill School Playground

(Updated) A mid-afternoon drive-by shooting on Baldwin Street saw 13 bullets fired near a middle school’s playground — and has prompted police to conduct more frequent patrols in and around the area during school hours.

New Haven Police Department (NHPD) spokesperson Capt. Rose Dell described that shooting in a Wednesday midday email press release.

She wrote that, at 3:37 p.m. on Wednesday, ShotSpotter activated to let police know about gunfire near the playground of John C. Daniels School at 587 Congress Ave. School was not in session at the time, but there were after-school programs taking place.

Officers arrived and located one live round of ammunition, and 10 fired cartridge casings in the roadway on Baldwin Street near the playground,” Dell wrote. Another three fired cartridge casings were found at the intersection of Baldwin Street and Davenport Avenue.”

Dell wrote that no one was shot and police found no property damage from the shooting. She also said that investigators have determined that no individuals at the school or from the school were targeted by this shooting.

Police officers will be conducting more frequent patrols in and around the school grounds during school hours,” Dell continued. The increased patrols are intended to provide a visible and reassuring police presence, and to deter any potential criminal activity.”

Anyone with information on this incident is urged to call detectives at 203 – 946-6304 or through the department’s anonymous tip-line at 866 – 888-TIPS (8477).

On Monday afternoon, Police Chief Karl Jacobson announced that city police had arrested a 26-year-old man and a 22-year-old man who they believe were involved in the playground-adjacent drive-by shooting.

He said that police made the arrest the day after the shooting after tracking down a car that had the same license plate as one of the cars involved in the drive-by shooting. Police tried to stop the car, but the drivers fled from the Hill into West Haven and then back into the Hill before crashing into another car. As the car fled, Jacobson said, the occupants of the vehicle tossed out of the window two handguns, a revolver, and 280 grams of fentanyl. While police have not yet linked any of those guns with the playground-adjacent shooting, they have linked one of the guns with a different recent shooting, and subsequently arrested the two individuals on gun and drug-related charges.
