32-Year-Old Shot, 43-Year-Old Stabbed In The Hill

City police are investigating a nonfatal shooting and a nonfatal stabbing that took place on back to back days in the Hill this weekend.

In a separate incident, police arrested an 18-year-old New Havener in the East Shore for allegedly stealing a car and possessing a semi-automatic handgun without a permit.

City police spokesperson Officer Scott Shumway sent out email press releases Monday about those three separate incidents.

The shooting took place in the early hours of Saturday morning.

At around 3:48 a.m., New Haven police received a call regarding a 32-year-old New Haven man who walked into Yale New Haven Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police determined that the victim had been shot on Spring Street between Dewitt Street and Button Street. The man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and listed in stable condition.

The stabbing took place at around 10:08 a.m. on Sunday.

That’s when city police received 911 calls regarding a person stabbed on Hurlburt Street between Spring Street and Washington Avenue. Responding officers found a 43-year-old New Haven man suffering from stab wounds.

An American Medical Response ambulance transported the man to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police ask that any witnesses who have not yet spoken with the Police contact the New Haven Police Department Investigative Services Division at 203 – 946-6304. The alleged car theft by an armed 18-year-old, meanwhile, also took place Sunday morning.

Shumway wrote that, at around 2:46 a.m. Sunday, city police observed a white Nissan Rogue driving recklessly” in the East Shore neighborhood.

Police later determined that the vehicle had been stolen.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, Shumway wrote. That’s when the 18-year-old New Haven driver exited the vehicle, and fled on foot.”

After a short foot chase,” officers observed the man ditch a firearm. Police later apprehended the man and recovered a semi-automatic handgun.

Police have charged the man with possession of a pistol without a permit, weapon in a motor vehicle, possession of a high-capacity magazine, second-degree larceny, third-degree criminal mischief, interfering with the police, operating a motor vehicle without a license, and traveling the wrong way on a one-way street.
