Shots Fired At Off-Duty Officer

An off-duty Meriden police officer who formerly worked for the New Haven Police Department was shot at Thursday night outside of the Essex Townhouses on Quinnipiac Avenue.

Here’s what happened, according to a Friday afternoon email press release sent out by New Haven Police Department spokesperson Capt. Anthony Duff.

On Thursday at approximately 8:57 p.m., New Haven patrol officers responded to the area of the Essex Townhouses 1134 Quinnipiac Ave. at for the report of shots fired at a vehicle.

When they arrived, the officers located the victim, an off-duty Meriden police officer.

The officer’s vehicle had numerous bullet holes to the rear of the vehicle, but the officer was not injured,” Duff wrote. The officer stated that as she exited the complex, she heard gunshots and observed a male on the sidewalk shooting toward her vehicle.”

City police detectives and the Meriden Police Department are working together to see if this incident is related to the officer’s work as a police officer, Duff wrote.

This officer was a police officer in New Haven who transferred to Meriden a few years ago.”

He wrote that New Haven detectives processed the scene and recovered numerous shell casings and other evidence. Detectives and officers held a crime scene as detectives canvassed the neighborhood.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the New Haven Police Department at 203 – 946-6304. Callers may remain anonymous.
