Sleeping Driver Loses Sleeping Driver’s Lost Handgun

If you want to hold onto a gun you stole from a sleeping driver, it pays to stay awake behind the wheel.

A 37-year-old driver learned that lesson the hard way Monday on Crescent Street.

Police got a call about a man asleep behind the wheel of a suspicious” parked car at around 9 a.m., according to Assistant Police Chief David Zannelli. They arrived to find the man indeed catching Zs behind the wheel — and a .40-caliber Beretta pistol in full view on the front passenger seat. Also in view on that seat were bags of crack, ecstasy pills and marijuana packaged for sale, according to Zannelli.

Police woke up the driver and arrested the man, who has a history of convictions on felony burglary and weapons offenses, on 10 different charges — including possessing a stolen weapon. It turned out the gun had originally been stolen from the lot of the Ferry Street McDonald’s back in 2016 — from a car, Zannelli said, in which the owner had fallen asleep.
