Tweed Flights To West Palm Beach Announced

Finally, a service that will help the large amount of New Haveners clamoring to get down to Mar-a-Lago.

How about the Midwest/Chicago/Detroit/Milwaukee or Pittsburg, or Mid Atlantic/DC or Atlanta or Charlotte area? While Florida will be great for CT vacationers and snowbirds, I'm sure businesses would like to see airline service to major connection airport hubs and to major metropolitan destinations that caters to their travel needs, both domestic, cross country or overseas.

I know, Heather. Who knew there was this enormous demand in the area to fly to Florida!!!

I actually might use this one, as my wife's family has a place in Vero. Still, what New Haven really needs is flights to business centers, not vacation places. These flights do nothing to help New Haven.

Is this low budget Florida-bound carrier gonna be another Spirit Air with daily mid-air brawls that will require the cops to meet each arriving plane? This will not burnish the Elm City's reputation on the national stage, nor will it help our strained police force. I for one only fly first since Covid and Avelo doesn't offer first.

I think we will see how this plays out with the Florida destinations. If everything goes well,maybe by the spring they will consider starting flights to Chicago and Charlotte, which would be perfect!!

For everyone asking about other destinations, RELAX. Getting snowbirds to florida first makes the most sense especially considering the time of year it is. Be patient, they're going to add more destinations with time. With the size of the current terminal adding too many destinations at once will be a disaster. Lets sit back and enjoy the process. I have Fort Lauderdale booked in November, Fort Myers booked in December and west palm beach booked in January. Cant wait to support or local airport.

I'm glad a lot of people in the area can take advantage of these flights but I doubt I will be one of them. Reviews of the Avelo plane interiors are not great. A seat pitch of 29" and 17" of width is pretty tight. I think the seats will be too small for me so I'll continue to make the trek up to Windsor Locks for now.

Lifer;The model seems more Southwest. I don't expect O'Hare, or even Midway, but Gary. In a few years, they may resurrect hubs at St Louis and Pittsburgh. There's lots of excess capacity there since the departures of TWA and USAir.

All airlines are having the same experiences. Just arresting them is not enough, they should be put on the No fly list. Chicago maybe, Charlotte no, not that large of a business city compared to Chicago.
The nice thing about Avelo is that they can adjust frequencies, 2 flights per week, 3 flights per week, etc. and people know that going in whereas carriers like American, Delta ,United, etc offer for the most part daily service.
Bookings must be very good for them to add a new city and increase frequencies on the other flights so quickly.

I agree, with this new service may come renewed interest in Tweed and perhaps United will offer flights to Chicago and Delta to Atlanta, both good hub airports. Since Avelo will not be using the terminal jet bridge on the 2nd level, it would allow United or Delta to use it for regional jet service.

It appears there is a large market for air travel in the New Haven area in spite of past claims by a few that no market exists.

I have friends and family in the DC/Maryland area, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and Chicagoland areas, the entire West Coast from Southern Cali to Washington State and Alaska, family in Canada, and I know snowbirds in N. Carolina, and plus family in Europe. I also have lots of friends and family that like to travel from the Greater New Haven area to those locations or major airline hubs to make easy connecting flights. While Florida is great for snowbirds and vacationers, we need more major business destinations and major airline hubs destinations with overseas and cross country service connections. Now that Florida is covered with flight service, Avelo needs to poll all the medium to large businesses in Southern CT from Bridgeport to New London and as far north as Waterbury, Middletown and Foxwoods/Mohegan Sun to see where a majority of those businesses would like airline service to.

Dear steve---- let us revisit this great wave of demand that you predict in a year or so. Try to remember your bold promises as you bask in your victory over your neighbors around Tweed. I will remember.

@ Heather C, Avelo is a point to point airline, Tweed could not support service to all those cities you mention with non-stop flights. However, United and Delta could by means of one stop service via Chicago and Atlanta. Even Bradley has most of its service to other cities by hub airport connections. If Bradley is not a hub airport, Tweed will never be but with service to 2-4 hub airports, many cities can be reached with a one stop connection.

For years Tweed has been a very underutilized asset but now it seems Tweed will become the airport for the shoreline. Not a huge operation, but one that can meet the needs of most domestic travelers and as for international flights, the state is fortunate to be bracketed on two sides with great international airports, JFK and Boston Logan.
Tweed is a victory for many thousands for travel, jobs, and other services that Tweed provides. Neighbors chose to move into Tweed's neighborhood, not the other way around. There are many living near Tweed who like having a commercial airport nearby, for those who don't feel they can put up with the airport, I say wait and see what the actual conditions will be. Back in the 90's when United announced they were coming to Tweed, some gave dire predictions that never materialized.
In less than two months the new service will begin.

Three bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, 1700 square-foot ranch listed for 280,000 just closed at full price. I guess the airport is really hurting values over there…. 1 block from the airport.

That why I said we need service to major hubs to connect to overseas and cross country service, and I said they should poll businesses to see what their needs are. Who knows, maybe when Avelo polls the moderate to large businesses from the southern half of the state, they'll discover a destination or hub that surprises them in the amount of demand it generates. If Avelo only concentrates on vacation or snowbird locations, then they won't be successful outside of peak snowbird or vacation travel times. Businesses need airline service year round and provide steady airline income, and encourage more businesses to locate here or expand here, which in turn creates more airline service demand. It's a win-win.

Heather, low cost carriers like Avelo, Spirit, Frontier, Allegiant, etc all specialize in catering to the leisure traveler, thus no hubs for connecting flights. Legacy airlines like American, Delta, United, Southwest are the airlines that appeal to the business travelers although business travel is down.
Avelo could in the future offer service to cities like Pittsburgh , Chicago, Cleveland but it would not be daily service.
Breeze airways at Bradley offers four weekly flights to Pittsburgh PA, Columbus, OH, Norfolk, VA and Charleston, SC.
Tweed has never had a low cost airline whereas Bradley has a few and some offer service to Florida. The biggest market for air travel in the metro New Haven area is Florida. We need to be patient and I feel after some time United or Delta may offer service to the Chicago and Atlanta hub airports.

I admire your honesty regarding the runway issues, if others would follow your lead, facts, not fiction can be presented.
I somehow feel those who bought homes near Tweed bear some responsibility in buying a home near a long standing airport.
I remember when Eastern airlines had service at Tweed with 727's and DC-9's, I'm sure I am not alone in these memories. Those planes were very loud and the Allegheny BAC-400 jet was the loudest plane I ever heard at Tweed.
Times have changed & so have modern airliners, they are much quieter & have a smaller noise ground footprint. The E-175 that American has used at Tweed is very quiet & the 737's Avelo will use are next-gen models.
I don't agree that Tweed should be prevented from offering airline service as the airport has had service for decades. people have managed to put up with the airport even when back in the 90's.Tweed had many flights by United, Usair & Continental along with some smaller commuter airlines. Those planes are gone from airline fleets & newer less noisy planes have been added. Over the years some people moved away, but few stay & complain about what all airports do.
I don't feel those who moved near Tweed have a valid cause for complaint. Had Tweed been built in the last few years, I could see homeowners having a valid cause for complaint.
This point is where we don't see eye to eye, I put responsibility on the homebuyer for knowing Tweed was close and still buying the home. " It is much harder and more wrenching to have to leave your home." It appears to be more wrenching to stay & be unhappy. All of us have made decisions that we regret making, but we managed to make the best of it.
