Restored tidal wetlands. Safer runways. “Fortified taxiways.”
Look for that to come to Tweed-New Haven Airport, thanks to a newly announced $1.033 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.
New Haven’s U.S. Congresswoman and senators — Rosa DeLauro, Dick Blumenthal and Joe Lieberman — Thursday afternoon made the announcement of the grant to the airport’s authority.
The three spoke in unison, via press release, stating: “Tweed-New Haven Airport is a critical part of our regional transportation infrastructure and the enhancements to the runway safety areas will increase its economic contributions to the region. Just as important is the need to preserve the many natural habitats along our coastline. This funding will complete the required wetlands mitigation — replacing 10 acres of impacted wetlands with the creation of 40 acres of tidal marshlands — therefore protecting the unique character of our shoreline.”
It is good that Tweed is being maintained.
But there has been a promise, so far not kept, that after all this money and work is over, there would be improved service and places to go nonstop that are not Philadelphia.
It was not that long ago that one could fly to Washington, D.C., Chicago, JFK and Newark on any one of a half dozen carriers. Remember Air Wisconsin and flying to JFK on a Twin Otter?
The Chicago jet service suffered because of short runways, but that has been fixed, or is on the way to being fixed. Is the city not working as hard as it should to sell the city to airlines, or is that effort not being communicated to citizens like me.
