Maria Ayala and her father Liborio drove from Bridgeport to Morris Cove early Wednesday morning to kick off a visit to their old home in Puerto Rico — as two of 145 passengers on the inaugural flight from Tweed New Haven Airport to San Juan.

The Ayalas joined dozens of fellow flyers and local and state dignitaries by an upper-level gate of Tweed’s departures terminal in the runup to the sold-out 7:30 a.m. flight from New Haven to Puerto Rico’s San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU).

Wednesday’s flight marked the start of the the budget airline Avelo’s 18th direct route from the Morris Cove regional airport, and its first outside of the continental U.S., since beginning its New Haven operations in November 2021.

It comes as the airport continues to pursue extending its runway and building a larger terminal on the East Haven side of the property to boost commercial air travel in the area, and as some neighbors continue to push back on that expansion’s impact on noise, air quality, and traffic.

I love it. It was the best news ever,” Maria said with a smile about the easier access from her current home in Bridgeport to her former home in Trujillo Alto. She said she plans to stay in Puerto Rico for three weeks on this trip, while her dad will stay three months.

Avelo will be flying twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from Tweed to San Juan, according to a press release celebrating the new route. Maria told the Independent that she hopes they increase the frequency of Puerto Rico-bound flights soon. Going to JFK, she said, can be such a headache.

PRU's Joe Rodriguez: This flight "provides an opportunity to deepen our roots."

State Reps. Geraldo Reyes, Juan Canderlia, and Christopher Rosario.

West Rocker Abraham Santiago: A "full circle moment."

Speaker after speaker at Wednesday morning’s 6 a.m. press conference — from Gov. Ned Lamont to Mayor Justin Elicker to Puerto Ricans United President Joe Rodriguez to State Reps. Juan Candelaria, Geraldo Reyes, and Christopher Rosario — heralded Connecticut’s sizable Puerto Rican population, making up roughly 300,000 people. They said Avelo’s new direct flights to the island will only deepen the connection between the state, and the New Haven area in particular, and Puerto Rico.

Abraham Santiago agreed. Born and raised in New York City and currently living in the West Rock neighborhood, Santiago described Wednesday’s trip back to the island with his wife as a full circle moment,” as he is a child of the diaspora.”

He said he plans on trying to connect with aunts and uncles and an older generation” of his family who still live on the island during this trip, which he and his wife are taking as both a birthday and wedding anniversary celebration.

Santiago said it took him all of 15 minutes to get door to door from his house to the airport Wednesday. That convenience” was something special, given that this is his first time back to Puerto Rico in 20 years.

Puerto Rican-based social media influencers Miredy Rivera, Taleyshka Gonzalez, and Diana Otero.

Terry Keyes and Mahogany Tyson: Ready to salsa.

Terry Keyes and Mahogany Tyson were also heading to Puerto Rico Wednesday morning as part of a birthday trip, as Keyes is turning 53 this weekend.

The Meriden couple has never been to Puerto Rico before, nor do they have any family or friends on the island. Yet. By the end of their four-day trip, Keyes promised, they’re bound to have a whole bunch of friends they’ll want to visit again.

It’s easy to get here. No hassle,” Keyes said. Tyson added that, even though they live closer to Bradley airport in Hartford, they find it easier getting to and flying out of Tweed. Shorter lines, an easier drive.

What’s at the top of the list for what they plan to do during their trip to Puerto Rico?

Salsa dancing,” Keyes and Tyson said in near unison.

They’ve never salsa danced before. But they plan to learn.

Other departures scheduled for Wednesday.

At Tweed at 6 a.m.
