Typo-Catcher Mugged — In Chicago!

Goodwillie and Mitts.

Look, we publish a lot of stories. And we have a small staff. So we’re lucky to have readers like Hannah Goodwillie, who volunteer to let us know when we’ve made mistakes, even from nearly 1,000 miles away.

Goodwillie, who caught 523 typos and lives in Chicago now, spent three and a half years in New Haven, falling in love with the city and finding their place among its activist and spiritual communities. Reading the Indy has been a wonderful way to stay in touch with what’s happening in New Haven,” they said, and I’m a habitual proofreader so it was natural to start submitting typos as I caught up on the latest articles!”

While Goodwillie has a knack for language and grammar, they spend their days working as an instructional coach for an online math enrichment program, both doing their own teaching and supporting other math teachers.

They live with their partner Joy – who won last year’s typo-catching contest! – and their polydactyl cat Mitzvah, or Mitts for short. Goodwillie opens the Independent site every few days and spends some time catching up on news and submitting typos. As far as getting help from Joy, Goodwillie assures us, there’s been no collusion!”

And don’t worry, we’ll still be sending Goodwillie their victory WNHH mug.

Runners-up and previous winners Anne Tubis and Barb Levine-Ritterman found 394 and 163 typos, respectively.

This year’s typo-catching competition has already begun. If you think you have what it takes (or just want to try your hand at catching a couple of typos), we always appreciate the help. Follow the competition and submit your own caught typos here.
