When the Branford Girls’ softball team wins, they win big.
Although the Hornets finished the season with a record of only 5 – 15 they had a number of high scoring victories.
In their five wins they outscored their opposition 67 – 3 in the tough Southern Connecticut Conference.
“When we are ‘on,’ we can be pretty tough,” said Coach Chuck Reale (pictured). “With a little luck we could have won four or five more games and made it to the state tournament.” Among the Hornets losses were six games where the margin was three runs or less.
One of those games where they put it all together was last week at the West Haven game.
The Hornets outhit the Blue Devils 18 – 4 and with a strong pitching performance by senior Julia Rosenberg (pictured)held the Westies to only one run and four hits in an 8 – 1 victory.
The leading hitter in the West Haven game was senior catcher Marissa Guglielmi (pictured)who went 4 for 4 with a double.
Other big hitters included Senior Co-Captain Nicole Carrano who went 3 for4 including a triple. She also had 3 RBI’s.
Senior Cynthia Lerman also went 3 for 4 as did junior Matilda Kreider. Sophomore Katie Massey chipped in with 2 singles.
