8 Arrested At Cross

Cross needs serious intervention work, dedicated social workers, and ABSOLUTELY needs to get more mileage out of the EIGHT administrators (all over 100k) who run the school.

One Principal & 7 vice-principals (with an extra vice-principal who I believe is stationed at another school). 9 administrators total.

According to a student who volunteers in the school, they have no detention, JUST suspensions for punishment.

The administration really needs to look into some innovative disciplinary techniques and stop just sending kids home.

Where I grew up, if a guy got beat up by more than one person, the beaters were considered to be wusses, not tough guys.

i don't know if it is more absurd we are raising children to act like barnyard animals or that they can't pull up their pants!

i guess these students were not advised yet of "the dream",..lol,..this is nothing new this is product that has been coming out the new haven school system for years, the type os product that will continue to drain our social services. the type of product that will never become a productive member of society. it's ashame for all the good students who want to learn and have the opportunity to better themselves. the one's that do not fall victim to all the gangster/coward/thug wanna-be tough guys...

Unless this video was taken by school surveillance cameras(which should be in place in all classrooms and hallways of NHPS) the no cell phone in school policy was also being violated. Before everyone starts whining...the rule is no cell phones for taking pictures or videos, texting, cheating on tests, calling your friends,etc. Phones are in every classroom and the main office for emergencies and important messages for all staff and students. People videoing fights or attacks and putting them on sites like youtube are encouraging and/or escalating the problem. The New Haven Independent should be calling attention to this problem, not promoting this violence among minors.

It is unclear from the article, but one possible interpretation is that the friends of the kid who got hit multiple times from behind jumped in to what was initiated as an unfair fight.



In general, school bullying and fighting isn't a new phenomenon. Its more widely talked about today in the media and people are more open about it then in past generations, but it's not something new. In the 1870s, the Irish had it pretty bad in English and Dutch dominated schools. In the 1890s, Germans had it pretty bad. In the 1910s, Italians recieved their fair share of cruel beatings and bullying. Fights and bullying also aren't an urban problem. In fact, cyber bullying is prolific in white, suburban, middle class America in a way incomparable to urban peer physchological torment.
Yes, everyone agrees fighting isn't such a great thing, but then let's replace the objectification of women and the neighborhood reppin', the two main causes of conflicts, with something else if we want to be serious about addressing the issue. Thriving neighborhoods with bustling streets, job opportunities, sidewalk cafe seating, and diversity would be one way of attempting to address this. Teachers living in the neighborhood where there students are from, seeing them at the grocery store, walking down the street, in church, at the dentist, etc creates accountability and association outside the classroom, thus reinforcing structures of the school setting. The school as a neighborhood social construct for after school activities, dances, and fund raisers, etc any number of things works better than exaggerating a problem that has existed since different cultures began interacting.

Everyday we are reminded why we pay so many tax dollars for this kind of administration.Way to go ...

I heard from an anonymous source that this all started over a game of cards. People must have to much time on their hands.

Even if there is a no cell phone policy, I'm glad that somebody recorded the event because thats what citizen journalism (advertant or inadvertant) is all about.
