8 Arrested At Cross

Fights broke out in the Wilbur Cross cafeteria Wednesday, leading to a slew of suspensions and arrests.

The fights broke out during Wednesday’s early lunch wave.

Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Office Joe Avery:

It started between two students who had been involved in a fight off school grounds three weeks ago.

One of them was standing in line when the other allegedly hit him several times” in the face and the back of head.

Soon multiple fights” erupted. All their friends started jumping in,” Avery said.

While helping to break up the fight, Officer Miguel Aponte injured his back and arm. (He was subsequently treated and returned to duty.”)

In the end, cops arrested eight kids on assault, breach of peace, and riot-inciting charges.

The school also suspended the eight students, according to Will Clark, the school system’s chief administrative officer.

The administration, security, and school resources officers were able to step in immediately and quell the situation,” Clark said.

According to one teacher at the school, kids present said the original combatants had just returned to school after being suspended for the earlier fight.

Cops also arrested a student a day earlier at Cross on assault and breach of peace charges after he allegedly punched another student during an argument in the library, according to Avery.

On Thanksgiving Day, police broke up a melee at Cross in the stands of the annual Hillhouse-Cross football game. They made six arrests.
