Twelve years after the city sold a Grand Avenue property to a lumber recycling business, the site will finally be cleaned up.
Environmental remediation will be coming to the property, Reclamation Lumber at 424 Grand Ave., thanks to a unanimous vote Monday evening by the Board of Alders.
The board voted to apply for a $230,000 grant from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. That money will go toward fulfilling a 2002 promise of environmental cleanup at the site.
Even though the city still has to apply for the money, in these cases it does so after it has received word that the money will be made available.
The city sold the lot to Reclamation Lumber in 2002 after the state approved $300,000 in bonding for environmental remediation. The Department of Environmental Protection began the project and was supposed to complete it, “but was unable due to problems establishing the responsible party,” Alder Tyisha Walker, vice-chair of the City Services and Environmental Policy Committee, said Monday night.
In 2010, the state decided the city should manage the project and in 2011 gave the city $297,475 for the job. Now, three years later, an environmental consultant has determined that it will take an additional $230,000 to finish the work, hence the present grant.

Who owns the land, the city? Might be a nice place for Mayor Harp to put up a place for the homeless. She did get a National Award, how about a little help with New Haven..
