As the children of Westville Community Nursery School nap to the sounds of a piano and play outside, those in charge of the school are working to improve the school with a new solar roof.

WCNS Director Patty O’Hanlon said that when they purchased the new Tour Avenue building for the school six and a half years ago, they were told they would need a new roof in five to eight years. “And it certainly needs it now,” she said: The school already had to repair one section of their roof earlier this year due to leaks. The timing for the new roof comes as part of the school’s 50th anniversary celebration.
O’Hanlon said that WCNS decided to try to install a solar roof to help improve the environment. The school also hopes to save some money off energy costs through the new roof.
O’Hanlon said she hopes that once the roof is installed they can do lessons with the kids about it.
WCNS is asking for donations to help them fund the new solar roof. They have partnered with Sustainable CT, who have promised to match any donations up to $15,000. They are about halfway to their goal of around $32,000, half of which they plan will come from donations, and the other half from Sustainable CT, O’Hanlon said. This is confusing. Are they looking to install a "green roof" (with plants growing on it) or a "solar roof" (presumably a regular roof but with solar panels)?
