(Updated) Somebody shot and killed a 29-year-old New Havener named Shaquille Chazz Pearson at Grand Avenue and East Pearl Street on Tuesday afternoon, marking New Haven’s 20th homicide of the year so far.
According to an email press release sent out by New Haven Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Cherelle Carr on Tuesday night, at around 4:49 p.m., city police received a report of a gunshot victim at Grand and East Pearl in Fair Haven.
Upon arrival, police found a 29-year-old man suffering from “multiple gunshot wounds to the body.”
Officers set up a crime scene and rendered aid until firefighters and an ambulance arrived. The victim was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he died. On Wednesday evening, Carr sent out a followup email press release identifying the homicide victim as Pearson.
Detectives responded to the scene to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and look for surveillance footage. Shotspotter was not activated in the area, but “ballistic evidence was found on scene.”
“It was reported that prior to the shooting, a vehicle drove down East Pearl Street towards Exchange Street,” Carr wrote. “A passenger from the vehicle began discharging a firearm that struck the victim. Officers canvassed the area for the described vehicle. The vehicle was later recovered unoccupied in North Haven. The vehicle was towed for processing.”
