Surprise! Instead of staring at his computer, Nick Murphy found himself strolling through cherry blossom-budding Wooster Square Monday en route to picking up iced vanilla lattes.
Most Monday mornings “I would have already been in a meeting for a couple of hours,” Murphy, a remote-working development software salesman, said during a sidewalk chat on Chapel Street during the “Word on the Street” segment of WNHH FM’s “LoveBabz LoveTalk” program.
His Boston-based employer informed him Sunday that people would have Easter Monday off.
Murphy actually lives in Tampa. He’s in New Haven visiting his girlfriend, who moved up here to take a job at Yale.
She lives at The Whit, one of four new upscale complexes eventually adding 850 new apartments to former surface lots and one or two-story commercial strips in a four-block area connecting Wooster Square to Downtown.

Freed from work (which he does like, he said), Murphy started the morning working out in The Whit’s gym. He then took the one-block stroll on Chapel to Kaiyden’s coffee shop to order the to-go lattes for himself and his partner.

“She doesn’t know I’m picking it up,” he confessed with a smile.
... and jogging across Olive Street back into the Whit.
Murphy has made several trips to New Haven in the year-plus that they started dating. He described the Whit’s apartments as spacious, “nice,” with a “modern feel.” He has enjoyed what he has seen so far of the city, which like Tampa is in a growth spurt.
“Every visit I’m learning new things, seeing new places,” he said of the Elm City. “It’s very different than what I’m used to. The pizza is really good. The winters are a little cold. A lot of friendly people.” His girlfriend didn’t get Monday off, so he anticipated doing some reading, maybe watching some TV, then heading back out on foot to check out more of New Haven.
Murphy plans to remain in town through the weekend for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Wooster Square Park. Having grown up in D.C., he knows all about the splendor of the Spring moment. He said he’s looking forward to see what that looks like here in New Haven.
