Jorge Oquendo (pictured) Friday became the one millionth customer to fly to or from Tweed New Haven Airport since Avelo Airlines set up shop here 17 months ago.
Tweed supporters, critics, and innocent bystanders have 15 extra days to weigh in on the potential environmental impacts of a larger regional airport, now that the federal government has lengthened the public comment period for the airport’s draft Environmental Assessment (EA).
After roughly a year and a half of study, Tweed New Haven Airport and a national aviation consultant have published a federally mandated environmental assessment of the airport’s expansion plans — opening the review up to 45 days of public comment, and bringing the airport one step closer to constructing a new terminal and extending the current runway.

Tweed New Haven Airport is growing 34 more parking spaces to better accommodate the flood of cars consistently competing for spots on site — as environmentalists and neighbors continue to fight expansion of the regional airport located along a wetlands-filled Morris Cove property.
Briana Bellinger-Dawson left her “dream job” as an arts educator at Nathan Hale School earlier this month after deciding that she could no longer afford to work part-time and not receive the support she needed to get her teaching certification.
Her departure has left a community of Morris Cove families already feeling the beloved teacher’s absence — and speaking out about their frustration that the city’s public school district didn’t do enough to hold onto a life-changing role model who went above and beyond to bring performing arts to city students.

Tweed airport won permission to build 203 new “temporary” parking spaces in anticipation of heightened holiday travel demand at the current New Haven terminal — and in advance of the planned construction of a new larger terminal on the East Haven side of the property.
Tweed’s airport authority is roughly a week away from submitting to the federal government a draft environmental assessment report — bringing the Morris Cove airport that much closer to realizing its plan to extend the runway and build a new, larger terminal on the East Haven side of the property.

Three city parks and a flood-prone west side road are slated to receive millions of dollars worth of upgrades thanks to a bevy of state and federal aid coming New Haven’s way.
Morris Cove neighbors will get a half-hour reprieve from morning airplane noises starting on Thursday, as Avelo Airlines pushes back its earliest daily from 6 to 6:30 a.m.
Rotting wood — and a city slip-up — led to the demolition of a 210-year-old house in Morris Cove, causing local preservationists to call on City Hall to work harder to protect historic structures.
A planned expansion of Tweed New Haven took a big step forward Wednesday, as the Morris Cove airport’s board members voted to approve a new 43-year lease and development agreement with a private company that plans to invest $100 million in extending the runway and building a new, larger terminal on the East Haven side of the property.
That vote came as East Haven officials ramped up opposition to the expansion plans — with every town-appointed board member voting against the lease agreement, and the town’s mayor threatening a lawsuit, and even a “street fight” if necessary, in order to stop this project from moving ahead.
Nearly 11 months after the Board of Alders signed off on a new 43-year lease between the city and Tweed’s airport authority, the Morris Cove airport’s board is set to vote on a parallel agreement that would pave the way for a long-sought major expansion.

A business-boosting nonprofit is teaming up with the city to bring the gospel of New Haven on the road — or, rather, on the plane — to some of the 14 communities newly accessible via Avelo Airlines.
Tweed New Haven Airport’s smooth-gliding expansion plans hit some political turbulence, as East Haven Mayor Joseph Carfora announced that, “at this time,” he is opposed to the construction of a new terminal in his town.
Tweed-New Haven Airport’s fast-paced expansion of daily flights continued, with the announcement Tuesday that Avelo Airlines will now fly nonstop to the hubs of Chicago and Washington, D.C. as well as Raleigh-Durham, N.C.
