Jazz Master Willie Ruff Dies

Willie Ruff, an influential and erudite jazz musician and scholar who connected the Yale and New Haven communities to America’s musical art form,” died on Dec. 24 in Killen, Alabama. He was 92.

Christine Carmichael, 74

Christine Carmichael, 74, of New Haven, CT entered eternal rest on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, surrounded by her family. Christine was born on September 16, 1949, to the union of James and Grace Carmichael, the first of 12 children, in Mullins, SC. The family then relocated to Connecticut when Christine was 14 years of age. Christine was educated in the New Haven Public School system, graduating from Lee High School and furthering her education at Stone Academy. Christine was a former employee of the City of New Haven. She was later employed by St. Raphael’s Hospital in Medical Records where she retired in 2012 after 35 years of service.

Lee Shaw, 65

Our beloved Lee Shaw completed his life’s journey at Yale-New Haven Hospital on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, at the age of 65. He was born on April 30, 1958, as a twin with his sister Linda in Clearwater, Florida to the Late Wilken Seward and Emma Jane Shaw. The Shaw family decided to move again on July 2, 1967, making New Haven, CT their permanent residency.

Vandy Abdulai, 83

The Late Mr. Vandy Abdulai was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone on Aug. 15, 1940. His parents were the Late Pa Bockarie Kargbo and Madam Boi Koroma. He attended the Tower Hill Municipal Primary School in Freetown and furthered his education by attending Methodist Boys High School in Freetown, where he pursued his secondary education. Vandy later entered the Congo Cross Technical Institute in Freetown to study Engineering and Technical Drawing. Upon completion of his course of studies at the Congo Cross Technical Institute with a Higher National Diploma (HND), he then moved to Germany to pursue advanced studies in engineering. Upon returning to Sierra Leone from Germany, he worked for a private engineering company in Freetown for a couple of years. He later left to work for the Corporation of American Relief Everywhere also known as CARE, in the Northern City of Makeni, Sierra Leone, the SIEROMCO Mines in Mokanji, and SIERRA RUTILE Mines in the lmperi Chiefdom, all located in the Southern Province of Sierra Leone.

Janett Nabors, 81

Janett Marie Brown Nabors was born on February 8, 1942, in Caswell County, North Carolina, to the late Alner Brown and the late Bessie Brown. Janett died peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023. She was the beloved mother of her sons, William R. Nabors, Jr. (Margo) and Philip W. Nabors (Linda) and loving grandmother to Jordan D. Nabors, William R. Nabors, III, Trevor J. Nabors, and Lailah M. Nabors.

Mother Gloria Fraser, 91

In Orangeburg, South Carolina, on March 15, 1932, the late Hammond and Estelle Davis Green birthed the youngest of fifteen children. They named the child Gloria Green. She was raised under the influence of a praying mother and received her early Christian training at First Calvary Baptist Church in Georgetown, South Carolina. She received her elementary and high school education in the public schools of Georgetown, South Carolina.

Maple Senior, 87

Maple Lee Wylie Senior, 87, of New Haven, passed away Monday, Nov. 13, 2023. She was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina on Feb. 2, 1936 to the late Thomas Procell Wylie and Irene Brice. She attended schools in Rock Hill. In 1959, Maple moved to New Haven where she met and married her beloved husband, William Senior. She worked for many years as a private duty caretaker.

Wirt Colman-Staten.

Wirt Louise Colman-Staten took her final breath, surrounded by her loved ones, and peacefully transitioned into God’s graces on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. The world became a little brighter with Wirt’s arrival, when the sun rose for her on January 8, 1948 in South Boston, VA. Wirt lived a full and warm life, brimming with joy. Her presence brought joy to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Carol Denise Johnson, 67

Carol Denise Johnson was born to Phillip Johnson, Sr. and Ruth James in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, on August 6, 1956. Carol received her formal education in Florence Public Schools, starting with North Vista Elementary. Following the deaths of both her parents, Carol began to assume the matriarch role of the Johnson family. At her Grandma Chizzie’s side, Carol helped take responsibility for her three beloved brothers and would be responsible for paying the bills, grocery shopping, maintaining the property, and overseeing her brothers’ education.
