Magarvey Josie was on the ball Wednesday.
He was behind his home at University Place and Elm Street getting his body and his soccer game back in shape with the help of a side wall at Fellowship Place.
Specifically, he worked on his passing. “You try to hit a certain spot” on the wall “so it’s coming back to a place where you can control it again. That helps your accuracy,” he said during a pause for a “Word on the Street” chat with the Independent.
Next he moved to a “Keep It Up” drill. That involved “juggling the ball and it’s not touching the ground.” He planned to finish up with a run.
Magarvey, 25, played center back at his alma mater, Johnson & Wales. He’s working to get in shape to play in a men’s league this summer. A recent hip injury strained his sciatic nerve. “So I’m trying to come back from that now.”
A chef by trade, Magarvey is also working on his entrepreneurial game. He plans to open a “Caribbean-inspired food” truck called Yano.
“Practicing against a wall helps your touch on the ball,” Magarvey said. “It’s a really good way to practice when you don’t have someone to play with.”
